April in our Gardens: Spring has Sprung!

April is fantastic—the garden is in its full youthful splendor again! This month we will plant a few new plant species that we’ve never cultivated before, including ginseng, Cardiospermum halicacabum (balloon vine), Mesembryanthemum crystallinum (common iceplant), Alchemilla (lady’s mantle). They are all beautiful and important for our plant-based prescription medicines. We harvest Primula veris (cowslip, pictured right) this month. We use an extract from this plant in our Cordiodoron Tablets, which supports heart health. It’s a very nice but laborious plant for us. Old man winter just won’t give up here! Just when we thought he was gone for good, he returned again. For nearly a week, we had sun and our ducks were running all over the garden, having fun and looking for something to eat. Then it snowed and we had to put them back in the greenhouse—at least for now, until it warms up again. This month it is gray, cold and wet in our Biodynamic® gardens at Weleda Naturals in Wetzgau, Germany. This month, our Biodynamic® gardens are beautiful and calm. Everything is covered with snow. Occasionally a few birds fly around, searching for food. Not much is growing, but there are a few exceptions. Helleborus niger (black hellebore) and Daphne mezereum (Daphne) are two medicinal plants that seem to have a totally different rhythm from most others. They flower even when there is snow! Over my New Year’s vacation, I took a trip to Napa Valley, where I toured a certified Biodynamic vineyard called Grgich Hills Estate. It’s tucked away in the middle of the valley. The day I visited the sun was bright, the air was crisp, and the mustard flowers were in full bloom, covering the hills in bright yellow. It was the perfect day for tasting…and touring! The atmosphere in the garden in May is beautiful. The greens are bright, and many plants are flowering. This is when my favorite plant flowers: Iris germanica—used in Iris Facial Care. The plant's color and shape fascinate me. We are planting Bryophyllum—used in Weleda medicines—in the greenhouses, and for the first time we're using biodegradable foil. The foil prevents weeds and dirt from getting on the delicate leaves. Previously we needed to clean and dry each leaf at harvest time — very time consuming! My 5 year old has a severe case of eczema. While in Spain I visited a homeopathic/nature store and was recommended to use the Weleda Diaper Care. Since then he has not had itchy flare up. I decided to add the baby shampoo and body wash and its done wonders for my little one. Thanks so much. I have just purchased the entire regiman for 40+. I hope it does the same for me.

Since my first child was born 5 years ago I went through dozens of diaper creams both pharmaceutical and natural. But with my sons sensitive new skin not only did I have problems finding a diaper cream to help with his diaper rash, but I couldn't even find one that wouldn't make it worse! When my local health foods store started carrying the weleda baby care line I thought I had nothing to lose by trying it. And since trying your diaper cream I have to say that not only have none of my children ever had to suffer from diaper rash but none of the parents I know will ever go back to their old diaper creams. I use this for my sons eczema, my husband's calluses and any other skin irritations I encounter!

My uncle was recently in a bad motorcycle accident and ended up having a large part of his body covered in rough scars "road rash". I bought him some of the diaper cream to put on his problem spots, as well as some of your calendula oil for after baths and showers. And he says that his skin feels like skin again and is no longer rough and scaley.

New Pommegranate Eye Care: I tried expensive brands which promise so much with no results. I thought why not try Weleda New Pomegranate Eye Cream? It really works immediately. The next day my face looked so diferent because I didn't have dark circles or puffiness. It immediately smoothed the wrinkles. I love this product. And also it doesn't hurt my eyes.
