The winner is ...: a pageant for natural beauty standards
I just returned from The Natural Beauty Summit. Despite what the name suggests, this is not a meeting of natural beauties – in most cases. The Natural Beauty Summit is an annual meeting of the leaders of the Natural Cosmetics Industry and a platform to exchange ideas that further the cause of natural products. A lot of what is discussed at this meeting will directly affect consumers (you!) in the coming months and years, so I find it appropriate to update you on some of the issues we are currently struggling with. The main problem that all the “real” natural brands, such as us, are struggling with is how to differentiate ourselves from the “pretend”...

5 Reasons why we love weeds...and more
The atmosphere in the garden in May is beautiful. The greens are bright, and many plants are flowering. This is when my favorite plant flowers: Iris germanica—used in Iris Facial Care. The plant's color and shape fascinate me. We are planting Bryophyllum—used in Weleda medicines—in the greenhouses, and for the first time we're using biodegradable foil. The foil prevents weeds and dirt from getting on the delicate leaves. Previously we needed to clean and dry each leaf at harvest time — very time consuming! Although weeds contribute positive things to the environment and increase biodiversity, weeding is important here in the garden, since weeds...

Pretty in Pink: Cultivating Beauty in New York City
Spring in New York City usually means lots of rain. Sometimes we skip spring completely and jump right from cold and rainy late winter to sunny and hot summer. Don’t misunderstand me, I love living here, and the beautiful and long fall more than makes up for the nonexistent spring. So last Sunday was one of these rare spring days (between a freezing and windy Saturday and a cold and rainy Monday) and we, which includes my wife Ameena and my two children Josef (4 ½) and Laila (1) ventured downtown to enjoy the sun and lunch “al fresco” at the Shake Shack in Madison Square Park. Why am I telling you this story? I would like to use this blog to show you...

The Start of Something Green
In April very beautiful things happen in the garden. Spring is near, and we all feel relieved at the appearance of the first splendid flowers — Adonis vernalis (pheasant’s eye), Primula veris (cowslip), Daphne mezereum (Daphne) and many others. The greenhouses are now full of young plants. Soon they’ll be in the garden, strong and healthy. We prepare the fields using several types of machinery. But just as important is the unique Biodynamic® application of the manure preparation. For the mixture to reach the right quality and property, the manure must be stirred in water for an hour.  Then we spray it on the fields to support their fertility. We...

Cultivating Beauty
Welcome to the entirely new and beautiful website of Weleda North America! I am very proud of what our great team has achieved in just three months. The beauty that you see throughout is what we call “Cultivating Beauty.” For me, that means looking for the beauty in everything and everyone and then cultivating it. We do this every day, and we hope to help you do the same. At Weleda, we don’t need to invent stories to make anything we do look more beautiful. It simply is. The heritage and the very nature of the company provide us with so many beautiful stories to share. The village in the Peruvian desert that cultivates the rhatania root we use in...

Attack of the Beauty Masque
Ben is wonderful.  He is 4 ½ years-old, sweet and very funny.  He wants my attention always.  We have a snack and read a picture book.  Lately he is interested in the Greek myths.  Medusa, the 12 labors of Hercules.   It is easy to be fascinated with these stories. To get a moment to myself I have a secret weapon so I don’t end up looking like Medusa: The Beauty Masque. I choose Weleda’s Almond Facial Masque because it is soothing for sensitive skin.  My skin is blotchy and sometimes dry.  The masque is a beautiful saffron yellow color because of the carrot extract in it. The carotene in...
