It’s hard to believe that it’s been just three weeks since I left Weleda North America to begin a six month stint working at Weleda AG in Germany. So far, the biggest difference I’ve noticed between Weleda AG and Weleda North America is the size of the offices. There are more than 1,000 employees working at our headquarters in Schwäbisch Gmünd, and only 30 in our office in Palisades, NY!
Weleda is the top-selling natural skin care brand in Germany, but despite its large size, Weleda AG does not feel like a corporate giant. You get a feeling of life, of a living organism, when you are here. There are Koi ponds with turtles and plants everywhere, and the architecture is unique and organic looking, as you can see from the picture. There is also a sense of family, just like in the North American office. Everyone says “Hallo,” or “Guten Morgen,” even if they don’t know you. People are more than willing to help if you get lost. Yes, I have been lost many times already, but at least it allowed me to meet a lot of my new colleagues.
Here in Germany, Weleda is much more than just a skin care company. It’s a symbol of the right way to do business. When I tell people where I work, their faces light up when I say Weleda. They go on to tell me stories about their childhood memories of using our products, how much they love the brand and how their grandmother always used it. It makes me proud to hear stories like this.
Germans embrace Weleda as a leader in the natural skin care industry. It's a company that sets standards that others follow. Here, price point and packaging matter less than consistency and quality over the years. Weleda never ceases to surprise me, and while this is just the beginning of my journey here in Schwäbisch Gmünd, I look forward to many more positive encounters, and to sharing them with you.
