Staying True to Our Sustainable Roots
Since its inception, 90 years ago, Weleda has embodied sustainability. Our company has always placed great importance on ecological, social and economic responsibility. Our founder Rudolf Steiner's vision was for a company that would put itself totally "at the service of the human being and the world as a whole.” Serving people and ensuring respectful treatment of the environment are firmly established values within our company. Today, with the environment ever at risk, our company has vowed to step up its efforts to protect the planet and to work with a meaningful footprint.  The Weleda Group has set several major goals and measures for...

A Day in Weleda's Biodynamic Gardens
Last week I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Weleda’s Biodynamic® gardens in Germany and take a tour of all 135 acres of them. The gardens are located in the tiny village of Wetzgau, near the slightly larger town of Schwabisch Gmund. As I walked up the road to Weleda Naturals, where the visitor’s center and a production facility are located, I recognized the unique ranch-style building I had seen only in pictures. Sabine, who is the event coordinator at Weleda Naturals, told me that I needed to arrive early the next morning to see the calendula. If I slept in, even a little, I would miss them.  The the...

Ingredient Spotlight: Chamomile
Summer is finally here and our chamomile flowers are in full bloom! Chamomile flowers are little, but they are special in a big way. You might know this flower best for its ability to be dried and made into delicious, calming tea, but here at Weleda it is known more as one of the amazing ingredients in our skin care and medicines. Also known as German Chamomile or Wild Chamomile, this annual herb blooms small white flowers. I think they look just like daisies. The best time to spot them is between May and August. They grow prolific throughout Europe and northern Asia. Chamomile is very fine and must be harvested by hand, then cleaned of soil and...

Ingredient Spotlight: Biodynamic Sea Buckthorn
Sea buckthorn needs one thing more than anything else: sunlight! This plant soaks up the sun’s rays to create radiant, golden-red berries. One look at them and you just know they must to be good for you—and they are! Sea buckthorn is proven to contain a rich cocktail of antioxidants and health benefits. It's rich in unsaturated fatty acids, pro-vitamin A and vitamin E, which help protect our skin from UV radiation and free-radical damage associated with signs of aging. What’s more, it possesses antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and the easily absorbed oils support the buildup of the skin’s...

Digging In: Our Biodynamic Gardening Day
Most of the cultivating beauty we do here at Weleda North America is from our desks. We leave the actual digging to the expert gardeners at our Biodynamic® gardens in Germany and on our partner farms around the world. Recently, however, we got to experience Biodynamic® gardening firsthand at the non-profit Pfeiffer Center in Chestnut Ridge, NY, not far from our headquarters in Palisades. It's thought to be the oldest Biodynamic® garden in the U.S. Armed with shovels, sunscreen and our Weleda-branded water bottles, our team spent a hot day volunteering at the gardens there. After an introduction by Mac Mead, program...
