The Value of Weeds
In the spring and summer, when the plants in our Biodynamic® gardens are flourishing, so are the weeds! Weeding is very important for us this time of year. Left unchecked, the weeds will compete with our cultivated plants for water, nutrition and light. They can also introduce and spread plant diseases. But even though they do battle with our plants, we don’t like to call them “weeds,” because that is such a negative word. In fact, while we may not harvest them, many of the weeds that pop up in our fields also have positive characteristics and effects, including well-known medicinal capabilities. The chemical herbicides that are so often used in...

Arnica to the Rescue
It seems to be the same every year: Spring arrives, the days get longer, and I just can’t wait to get outside. For me, spring means the start of bicycling and rollerblading season. Even though hot yoga keeps me in shape during the winter months, the first bike ride of the season invariably brings with it some sore muscles. Fortunately, I have a well-stocked medicine cabinet (more on that in a future blog), so relief is not far away. For muscle pain, my preferred treatment is the Weleda homeopathic Arnica Ointment . It’s also very useful for sprains and bruises. Of course, I always make a resolution to stretch more, but I’ve definitely got room for...

Stop and Smell the Roses
Summer is almost here. That means I have to be careful not to sunburn when I work in the gardens. (If I do burn, I use our Sea Buckthorn Body Oil to help repair it.) This is also the time of year when roses flower in our Biodynamic® gardens in Germany. We have several types of roses, but the ones with the most intensive and beautiful fragrance are Rosa centifolia and Rosa rubiginosa (also known as the sweet briar rose). Rosa centifolia is called the rose of a thousand petals, and they are very beautiful flowers. We have only about fifty of them in the garden. They would never provide enough rose oil for our Wild Rose Facial Care—for that we source...

Digging In: Our Biodynamic Gardening Day
Most of the cultivating beauty we do here at Weleda North America is from our desks. We leave the actual digging to the expert gardeners at our Biodynamic® gardens in Germany and on our partner farms around the world. Recently, however, we got to experience Biodynamic® gardening firsthand at the non-profit Pfeiffer Center in Chestnut Ridge, NY, not far from our headquarters in Palisades. It's thought to be the oldest Biodynamic® garden in the U.S. Armed with shovels, sunscreen and our Weleda-branded water bottles, our team spent a hot day volunteering at the gardens there. After an introduction by Mac Mead, program...

8 Easy Tips for Summer Skin Care
In the summer my skin behaves very differently than it does in the winter. The heat and humidity, combined with a lot more time spent outdoors, can quickly lead to clogged pores, bumps and blotchiness. Does yours do the same, too? I checked in with Patricia, our resident natural skin care expert, who gives amazing facials at our spa in Palisades, NY, for some tips on how to keep skin healthy, balanced and beautiful all summer long. Here are some of her suggestions: 1. To help keep blackheads at bay, avoid touching your face and wipe down your cell phone occasionally. Pressing it up against your cheek regularly can easily lead to clogged pores. ...
