Give Seasonal Allergies the Sneeze...Naturally!
Finally, spring is here! Daffodils and crocuses are showing off their colors, and everyone is glad that winter is behind us. Well, almost everyone. Those with seasonal allergies are perhaps not so excited. Inquiries about seasonal allergy relief have started coming in, and I am reminded that in the South, pollen season is well under way. For the most part, the beautiful spring flowers are not the culprits when it comes to causing misery—the pollen from these plants is relatively large and they depend on insects, like bees, for pollination. But trees, like birch (pictured right), maple and alder, have tiny pollen that’s so small they do not...

Spring Detox
With another snowstorm approaching the North East, it is hard to imagine that spring might be just around the corner. But at our Compounding Pharmacy, the prescriptions for cold and flu remedies seem to be getting fewer, so it looks like we have turned a corner. Plus, the crocuses seem to be readying themselves for an appearance, and daylight savings commences on March 10th – unmistakable signs of spring approaching.   Spring is the season of renewal, and this also applies to our bodies. Traditionally, it is the time for cleansing. Growing up in Germany, this was very much imbedded in the culture, from drinking cleansing teas...

Fight the Flu - Naturally!
According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), and quite a bit of media coverage lately, influenza activity is widespread this winter. This particular virus has been reported in at least 47 states in the US and over 11 provinces and territories in Canada. New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a public health emergency this past Saturday and many cities are following suit. Patients often report that their initial symptom is either a sore throat or a cough. Some colds can be very severe and hard to differentiate from the...

As the temperature starts to drop, though, heaters turn on and so begins the season of dry skin. Never fret: we’ve put together a few tips to help keep your beautiful skin happy, hydrated, and nourished all season long. Ensure that your face wash isn’t stripping or drying. That squeaky clean effect may feel great, especially in summer, but it can also strip skin of its natural balance- leaving your skin tight and dry. Try a gentle cleanser that includes moisturizing ingredients like Weleda’s Gentle Cleansing...

Easy Ways to Find Safe Cosmetics
This week’s blog is a guest blog from Sarah Finnie Robinson and our friends over at Practicallygreen.com .  Visit their site to learn more about how you can take simple steps to live a healthy, green lifestyle.  Happy Reading! Feeling parched, chapped, and leathery? You’re not alone. As the weather changes, so does skin. This goes for men, too! Before you moisturize, take a moment to consider what’s in the ointments, creams, and oils you’re slathering on your skin—after all, it is your largest organ. It’s a sad but true fact that the cosmetics we use daily can, and often do, contain chemicals that are...

The Benefits of Baby Massage
We recently started offering baby massage, and baby massage classes, at our spa in Palisades, NY. I sat down with Patricia Pol, our infant massage therapist and instructor, to ask her about the benefits of massaging your baby. Little did I know there would be so many! Here's what she told me.   Me: What are the benefits of baby massage? Patricia: There are so many! Massage helps improve your baby’s sleeping patterns and digestion. It can also ease congestion and soothe babies with colic. Using long strokes helps with muscle coordination and aids development. It can even help them build up the strength in their neck,...
