A Vineyard in Balance
Over my New Year’s vacation, I took a trip to Napa Valley, where I toured a certified Biodynamic vineyard called Grgich Hills Estate. It’s tucked away in the middle of the valley. The day I visited the sun was bright, the air was crisp, and the mustard flowers were in full bloom, covering the hills in bright yellow. It was the perfect day for tasting…and touring! Given my background at Weleda, I was excited to learn firsthand how Grgich uses Biodynamic agriculture to grow its grapes. I know the quality of Weleda’s products is unsurpassed because we grow our plant ingredients in our own Biodynamic gardens. So you can bet I had high expectations for...

Natural Ingredient Spotlight: Calendula
In the middle of January in New York, when it’s freezing cold and the days are short, it makes me warm and happy to imagine fields of bright orange calendula growing in our Biodynamic gardens in Germany, in summer. For centuries, calendula has been known for its healing properties. It’s also been called Marigold, Holigold and Mary Bud—vivid names that attest to the positive experiences people have had with this incredible plant. Scientific studies have shown that calendula—especially the blossoms—contain active ingredients that are anti-inflammatory, helping to heal irritated and even wounded skin. Every year we sow our calendula on a different...

The Beauty of Family Traditions
The deeper meaning of the holiday season is shining through this year. People are making gifts for each other and enjoying time spent together. Last year, we started a tradition for Ben’s Hanukkah presents. A friend told us of a rhyme: Something you want, something you need, something to wear and something to read. Dan and I come from separate religious backgrounds, so creating our own traditions really makes us feel like a family. We also started a family walk on Sunday mornings. We walk on a wooded path near our home. We run, skip and walk together, Dan, Ben and me. Then we have a delicious brunch. I usually workout alone but this is a great way to...

Could You be the Next Face of
Weleda is not about us; it’s about you—it’s about “we.” With that in mind, it seemed only natural to look for our next we magazine cover model from among all of you. The model for our last issue, Samira, was a friend of Marko’s, our COO. She was born in Iran (home of the pomegranate). She now lives in Jersey City, NJ, and enjoys eating pomegranates with her husband. With her timeless beauty and natural radiance, she was the perfect person for that cover. The search is now on for the face of our spring 2010 issue! Our “You Could Be we” contest launched on December 1, and we’ve already received so many wonderful entries that we can’t help but share a...

Coming in From the Cold
In November, the cold, wet and gray days start to set in, as the last of the fallen leaves are blown away by the wind. But we still have lots of work to do in our biodynamic gardens!   We put most of the fallen leaves to good use as a cover on certain plants to protect them against the cold. We also create a typical forest soil using humus—organic material produced by the leaves that helps feed the soil.   In November we start to trim the hedges that surround all of our fields. We have more than 14,000(m) of hedges around the entire garden. They are an important element in a biodynamic garden; they serve as a valuable habitat for necessary...

Enter Our Halloween Costume Contest!
Enter our Halloween Costume Contest & Giveaway! Halloween is Ben’s favorite holiday. I think it might be our community’s favorite holiday as well. Our town, Nyack, NY, hosts a parade every year that passes by our home. I am always amazed by the costumes and floats people create! This year the local rowing team was a boatload of Vikings! The owner of our local health food store, Back to Earth, dressed up as a carrot, with a broccoli sidekick. (It was a nice reminder to eat your vegetables on a day that is awash with candy.) Ben and his friend Taylor enjoyed dancing to the beat of the marching bands. Ben was a Ninja this year. ...
