Birch Tree Leaves

With another snowstorm approaching the North East, it is hard to imagine that spring might be just around the corner. But at our Compounding Pharmacy, the prescriptions for cold and flu remedies seem to be getting fewer, so it looks like we have turned a corner. Plus, the crocuses seem to be readying themselves for an appearance, and daylight savings commences on March 10th – unmistakable signs of spring approaching.

Spring is the season of renewal, and this also applies to our bodies. Traditionally, it is the time for cleansing. Growing up in Germany, this was very much imbedded in the culture, from drinking cleansing teas to undertaking healing fasts. I like to drink a liver support tea that we compound in our pharmacy. The main ingredient is dandelion root, and dandelion contains a slew of bitter substances, the so-called sesquiterpene lactones, which are believed to be responsible for the beneficial effects. In Italian cuisine, spring dandelion leaves are sautéed and served with pasta. Once again, an example of the innate wisdom of the Mediterranean diet at work.

Here at Weleda, we understand not everybody may have the time to brew a liver support tea at night, or the inclination to drink a bitter beverage. For those, I recommend our Hepatodoron tablets, a dietary supplement especially formulated to support the liver. *

To stimulate the elimination of toxins, it is a good idea to support the kidneys in their function by drinking birch or horsetail tea. Drink them during the day, or there is the real risk of waking up during the night for a trip to the bathroom.  It is important also to remember our skin, our largest organ. By working up a sweat, the pores open and the body has the chance to eliminate waste products. Hence, the sauna culture of the Northern and Eastern European countries. A similar effect can be achieved by dry brushing before taking a shower in the morning. Use a brush with natural bristles, start at the extremities and work towards the heart. This supports the skin in its elimination function and also promotes circulation. For added benefit, use our Birch Scrub in the shower and our Birch Cellulite Oil afterwards. Both products were developed to help improve skin tone and appearance, especially if used in conjunction with exercise. This way, you will be ready for swimsuit season. With that said, Happy Spring!
