The little town we live in outside of NYC has a beautiful little beach, and you can find us there almost every weekend in the summer. Since it’s on the Long Island Sound, the waves are itty bitty, but they are the perfect size for my two-year-old, who loves to try and outrun them.
In addition to sunscreen of course, these are my favorite must-have kids items for the beach.
Sun Hat with SPF
Since Bailey’s hair is still baby-thin, I keep her head covered to protect her scalp and to keep the sun off her face and neck. I love the i.Play Sun Protection Hat with UV-protection. Bonus features: it’s breathable, ties under the neck so it stays on and adjusts to fit many different head sizes.
Eco-Friendly Sand Toys
What is it about digging holes in the sand that kids love so much? Heaven help us if we accidentally leave our beach toys at home! We like the Sand Play Set from Green Toys because they’re made from environmentally friendly materials, helping to reduce fossil fuel use and C02 emissions.
Protecting the eyes from the sun is just as important as protecting the skin. Two good ones to try: Blue Planet Eyewear made with bamboo frames. For every pair bought, the company donates a pair of sunglasses to someone in need.
I also like Real Kids Glasses. They are third-party tested to provide 100% UVA/UVB protection, plus they are lead-, BPA- and phthalate-free.
Rash Guard Bathing Suits with SPF
I’m a big fan of the Hanna Anderson Rash Guard Suit for little ones. They are light, breathable and fast-drying, but they also provide a great deal of coverage. That makes applying sunscreen on a two-year-old who never stops for five seconds less stressful. They offer 99% UVA/UVB protection.
The water on Long Island Sound is popsicle-cold right now, so when the day is done, I wrap Bailey up in this soft and cozy Towelling Poncho from BodenUSA, and she’s nice and warm for the ride home.
A 2-in-1 to Wash the Day Away
When we get home, it’s straight to the tube for a bath. I love the convenience of Weleda’s Shampoo & Body Wash and the fact that it’s gentle on Bailey’s sensitive skin. To replenish moisture after a day in the sun, I sometimes add the Calendula Cream Bath to her water. The soothing natural scent helps to calm her down after a long day. Finally, after the bath, the White Mallow Body Lotion with coconut oil hydrates and keeps her skin healthy.
Happy summer, everyone!
