Ask the Esthetician

This year Weleda celebrates its 90-year anniversary, so you can be certain we’ve accumulated quite a bit of knowledge about skin care over the years. On these pages, we pose your questions to Weleda holistic skin-care expert and esthetician Patricia Pol, who treats customers at the Weleda Store & Spa in Palisades, NY, to arguably the most wonderful facial they’ll ever receive. Born and raised in Argentina, Weleda was a staple product in Pol’s bathroom as a child. Her mom treated her diaper rashes with Weleda Calendula Diaper Care, soothed her bruises with Arnica Massage Oil and treated her insect bites with Burn Care. Her favorite product today? “It’s a toss-up between Sea Buckthorn Body Oil, Calendula Shampoo & Body Wash and Salt Toothpaste — I can’t choose just one!” she says. So read on, and then send your skin-care questions to us at You can also follow us on Twitter and join us on Facebook to learn more about Weleda and our beautiful, natural world.

» I’m beginning to notice sun spots and signs of aging on my chest and hands. What can I do to help these areas age gracefully? — Julie, Winston-Salem, NC

It’s easy to forget to care for our neck, our hands and our décolleté, but because the skin in these areas is thin, it’s often where the signs of aging first appear. Sea buckthorn berry and seed oil is rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids that will help lessen the signs of sun damage, like dryness and discoloration. Massage our Sea Buckthorn Body Oil onto your décolleté after each bath or shower and rub the remaining oil into your hands to help lessen discoloration. Our Pomegranate Regenerating Body Oil is also good for the décolleté because it helps promote your skin’s natural renewal process, making skin appear firmer. During the day, our Pomegranate Firming Serum, an antioxidant-rich intensive treatment made with organic pomegranate juice and millet seed extract, will help reduce wrinkles by deeply moisturizing and firming skin. Apply it under the Pomegranate Firming Day Cream or Night Cream for the best results.

» I’ve always assumed that body oils would be greasy and difficult to use, but I’ve heard so many good things about Weleda’s, I’m interested in giving them a try. Could you tell me the best way to apply your body oils and what the benefits are of using an oil instead of a lotion? — Anna, New York City

Natural body oils like Weleda’s, which are made from sun-ripened plant, nut and seed oils, are incredibly beneficial for our skin. Because body oils are more concentrated than lotions, which contain water, their beneficial ingredients absorb more quickly and deeply, delivering all of the natural goodness — vitamins, essential fatty acids and hydration — that our skin needs to be smooth, balanced and beautiful. In fact, our skin is made up of fats (lipids) and oils, and its outermost layer, the epidermis, must replace close to 100 mg of lost lipids every day. Along with the daily loss of oil, our skin begins to lose its ability to produce these oils as we age. Plant oils, which are compatible with our skin’s own lipid layer, are the best choice to replace these disappearing oils. Apply the Weleda Body Oil of your choice right after a shower or a bath, when your skin is still damp. Pour a small amount onto damp skin and massage in a circular motion toward the heart until it’s absorbed, and voilà! Healthy skin is yours.

» Do I need to stick with just one of your facial care lines, or can I pick and choose various products? — Megan, Austin

This is a question Weleda fans often ask us. This year, Weleda launched its new Pomegranate Firming Facial Care and Cleansing Line. Whether your skin is sensitive, dry, oily, prematurely aging or naturally aging, we now have a skin-care line for you, to enhance your skin’s natural beauty. Weleda facial care formulas are designed for your skin during a certain stage of life, so you will see the best results if you stick to the line that is most suitable for you (Iris Hydrating Facial Care for your 20s, Wild Rose Smoothing Facial Care for your 30s and Pomegranate Firming Facial Care beginning in your 40s). The exception is our Almond Soothing Facial Care. It’s a beautiful solution when your skin is temporarily stressed, irritated or sensitive. You can use it for a while, and when your skin returns to its usual, stress-free self, you can switch back to the line that best suits your life stage. -Carrie Ruehlman
