We harvest the root of the Biodynamic® iris plant in the rolling hills of the Apennine Mountains in Tuscany, Italy. More than 2,000 iris rootstocks are nurtured and grown for Weleda—each one harvested after four years when it’s reached its peak. Its incredibly strong root is juxtaposed with its delicate, soft flower and long stem and leaves, showing us that finding balance in such extremes is possible. The farmers carefully extract the roots from the earth by hand in order to preserve their beneficial properties. Once they have harvested the root and taken what they need, the farmers replant the roots in to the ground, patting the earth where a new iris bulb will one day blossom into a beautiful flower.
